Going electric is not always possible. For some airport vehicles, battery-electric solutions may not provide the power or flexibility needed. Stargate therefore explored whether hydrogen could offer a viable alternative.
At Brussels Airport, VIL, WaterstofNet, DHL and Mulag joined forces to test hydrogen in real airside operations. DHL operated a hydrogen-powered towing tractor for cargo handling, supported by a mobile hydrogen refuelling station.
By testing both the vehicle and the infrastructure needed to keep it running, the partners gained practical experience with refuelling, safety procedures, operational fit and daily use. The tests confirmed hydrogen’s potential, while also highlighting the challenges that need to be addressed for wider deployment.
