Discover all Stargate projects

Over five years, Stargate brought more than 30 innovative projects to life. Below, you can explore all projects and discover their setup, key insights and lessons learned.

Terminal Interventions

Intelligent Terminal Command Centre
Intelligent Terminal Command Centre
What if a terminal could tell you when it was too warm, too busy or using more energy than necessary? The Intelligent Terminal Command Centre (ITCC) uses live data to help operators make smart decisions.
Digital Twin
Digital Twin
Would better-insulated windows save more energy than lowering the thermostat? Which renovation would have the biggest impact? The Digital Twin lets airports test ideas in a virtual world.
Smart Waste Flows
Smart Waste Flows
What belongs in a bin with an apple-shaped opening? An apple, not a plastic bottle. It is a simple cue that works across languages and cultures and can make passengers from all nationalities sort correctly.
Liquid disposal bins
Liquid disposal bins
Throwing away a half-full bottle at security looks harmless. But liquids ending up in the plastic waste stream add weight, cause leaks and make recycling less efficient. Liquid bins to the rescue!
Re-use coffee grounds
Re-use coffee grounds
Every coffee leaves something behind. At Brussels Airport, used coffee grounds were given a second life as reusable travel mugs.
Reusable utensils
Reusable utensils
A coffee cup may be used for just a few minutes. Brussels Airport tested whether one cup could be used again and again instead of becoming waste after a single drink.

Decarbonisation

UCO Collection (Used-cooking-oil)
UCO Collection (Used-cooking-oil)
Next time you have fries, you may very well be contributing to tomorrow’s aviation fuel. SAF can start with something very familiar: used cooking oil (UCO). As demand for SAF grows, securing sufficient feedstocks is key.
Electrification GSE
Electrification GSE
A flight relies on dozens of vehicles on the ground. You mostly do not notice them, yet they keep the airport running every day. Partners tested electric alternatives to make airport operations cleaner and quiet.
SAF Gamification
SAF Gamification
Step into a SAF experience developed by Budapest Airport and discover what SAF is and why it matters for the future of aviation.
Airside e-vehicles
Airside e-vehicles
A flight relies on dozens of vehicles on the ground. You mostly do not notice them, yet they keep the airport running every day. Partners tested electric alternatives to make airport operations cleaner and quiet.
Electric Fuel Dispenser
Electric Fuel Dispenser
We can all fill up a car. But an aircraft? It takes specialised vehicles that generate noise and emissions. Skytanking tested an electric refuelling dispenser, exploring a quieter and lower-emission alternative.
Hydrogen fueling
Hydrogen fueling
Going electric is not always possible. For some airport vehicles, battery-electric solutions may not provide the power or flexibility needed. Stargate therefore explored whether hydrogen could offer a viable alternative.
SAF purchase pilot
SAF purchase pilot
Companies want to reduce the footprint of their business travel. Stargate tested how a single SAF purchase could help companies do so together while ensuring that the related carbon credits could be shared between them, airlines and airports.

Modal shift

Mobility Databox
Mobility Databox
Not every commute can change. Early shifts, long distances or poor connections can make the car hard to avoid. The Mobility Databox shows where more sustainable options are realistic.
Shared bikes
Shared bikes
Getting from the train station, car park or mobility hub to your final destination is not always easy. And that can make the car feel like the simplest option. Shared bikes can help bridge that gap.
Road Rush Barometer
Road Rush Barometer
Nobody wants to find out about roadworks when they are already on the road. The RoadRush Barometer gives travellers a heads-up and nudges them towards a more sustainable alternative before they set off.
EV Insights
EV Insights
Making electric mobility work also means making charging smarter. The project looked at how different electric vehicles charge and what happens when they all draw power from the same local electricity network.
Airside Navigation App
Airside Navigation App
On the airfield, countless vehicles keep the airport running. The Airside Navi App helps Budapest Airport guide them more safely and efficiently, reducing unnecessary trips and emissions.
Smart Charging
Smart Charging
Electric vehicles are becoming part of everyday airport mobility. The next challenge is not only providing charging points, but using them smartly.
Autonomous shuttle
Autonomous shuttle
A self-driving shuttle sounds simple: get in and let it drive. But at an airport, it must move safely among staff, service vehicles and… aircraft.
Sustainable Airport Mobility Plan (SAMP)
Sustainable Airport Mobility Plan (SAMP)
Before changing the way people travel, you first need to understand how they travel today. Where do they come from? Which options do they have? What makes a more sustainable choice easy, or impossible?
Journey Planner
Journey Planner
The fastest route is not always the best one. The Journey Planner helps compare airport travel options by CO2 impact, cost and convenience.

Local environmental quality

Inspection Management App
Inspection Management App
Fresh fruit, flowers and other perishable goods cannot afford to wait. But paperwork and quality inspections can slow things down. Better coordination can make a real difference. Digital tools help inspections happen when shipments are ready.
Digital Green Lane
Digital Green Lane
Imagine dropping off or collecting a parcel at a pick-up point. If everyone arrived at once without warning, queues would quickly form. But when you have the right information upfront, you can plan ahead and avoid queues.
eCMR
eCMR
Goods keep moving after they land. The information that travels with them on the road should move just as easily. The eCMR replaces paper documents with digital information that is easier to access and share.
Continuous Descent Procedures
Continuous Descent Procedures
What people hear on the ground can be influenced kilometres away from the airport. By giving pilots a more predictable route, aircraft can stay higher for longer and descend in a more continuous path.
Sustainable taxiing
Sustainable taxiing
Aircraft do not only use fuel in the air. Before take-off, they need to reach the runway. With the TaxiBot, Stargate tested whether that journey could be quieter, cleaner and use less fuel.
Road Feeder Services
Road Feeder Services
The Road Feeder Services (RFS) project aimed to improve the predictability, real-time visibility and operational efficiency of airport-to-airport trucking flows arriving at BRUcargo.
CargoRun
CargoRun
The CargoRun project explored a smarter and more sustainable approach to landside cargo movements. By introducing an innovative Milkrun concept, import cargo from a single ground handling agent was consolidated and delivered to multiple freight forwarders using one shared vehicle.
RFID
RFID
Some travellers track their suitcase from their phone. What if cargo could do something similar? RFID creates a digital trail that helps partners know where shipments are and when they were last seen.
Solar energy sharing
Solar energy sharing
During a one-year pilot, 85 households in four neighbouring municipalities received green electricity generated by Brussels Airport’s solar panels.
