Five years of testing a more sustainable future for aviation
From 2021 to 2026, Stargate brought together airports, airlines, researchers, public authorities and technology partners to turn sustainable aviation ambitions into real-world trials. Led by Brussels Airport, this European Green Deal project explored more than 30 solutions across four airports.

It was created to accelerate the transition towards more sustainable airports and aviation by developing, testing and demonstrating solutions in active airport environments. Its projects focused on reducing emissions from airport and aviation activities, improving the local environment, and encouraging more sustainable travel to and from airports.

What did Stargate do?
Stargate turned airports into real-world testing grounds. Across more than 30 projects, the partners explored cleaner ground operations, Sustainable Aviation Fuel, hydrogen, renewable energy, circular resource use, air quality, noise, green logistics and smarter mobility. Some solutions were ready to move closer to implementation. Others uncovered technical, regulatory, operational or financial barriers that still need to be addressed. Both outcomes matter: they show where the sector can act today and where more work is needed.
What did we learn through Stargate?
Stargate’s lasting value lies in the practical knowledge created through testing: what worked, what did not, what needs to change and what others can build on. These lessons have been turned into practical e-learning modules that raise awareness of key themes and help the aviation sector move towards a more sustainable future.
