The mission of Stargate is to develop, test and deploy a set of innovative solutions making aviation and airports significantly greener and more sustainable.
The industry’s clear response to climate emergency aims at a further decarbonisation as well as the cooperation with local surroundings to improve the living quality and the stimulation of the modal shift. The plan includes over 30 specific projects, among which the promotion of Sustainable Aviation Fuels, electric ground handling materials and techniques to reduce aircraft engine run-up noise.
The consortium of 22 European partners including airports, airlines, mobility & knowledge institutes and local authorities. Stargate received a 24,8 million euro grant within the European Green Deal to research and demonstrate solutions before the end of 2026. Next to the grant from the Commission, partners contribute about 30% as co-funding, resulting in a total budget of just over 31 million euros.

Stargate’s circularity team developed a conceptual framework with concrete examples from Stargate’s lighthouse and fellow airports that can guide and support other airports to implement new processes, measure relevant actions and evaluate circularity initiatives.
