Every coffee leaves something behind. At Brussels Airport, used coffee grounds were given a second life as reusable travel mugs.
Brussels Airport serves around 10,088 cups of coffee a day, generating some 80 tonnes of used coffee grounds every year. These grounds are usually treated as organic waste, for example to make biogas.
But what if they could become something you use every day? Together with Autogrill, the airport’s food service partner, and Grounds-Up, a specialist in coffee waste recovery, Brussels Airport collected used coffee grounds and turned them into durable travel mugs.
The result is circularity you can hold in your hand: a familiar waste stream becomes a useful product. Yesterday’s coffee can help carry tomorrows.
