Biking to Brussels Airport for work: a growing trend thanks to Stargate

26.06.2024

The rise of bike commuting

Thanks to the Stargate project, more and more employees at Brussels Airport are choosing to bike to work. This highly successful initiative has not only encouraged people to swap their cars for bicycles but also promoted a healthier and more sustainable commute. Compared with 2022, 50% more employees from the Brussels Airport Community chose to bike to work in 2023. This is right on track for the Stargate objective to double the amount of bike commuting by 2026.

Stargate bike rides, kicked off on World Bicycle Day

World Bicycle Day, celebrated on June 3rd, marked the launch of Stargate Bike Rides. These group rides support and guide bike commuters with safe and enjoyable routes to the airport. Departing from various key locations, experienced bike commuters lead the rides, making the journey smooth and enjoyable. Signing up is possible in a WhatsApp community, connecting cyclists to find biking buddies for their commute.

Results in figures

The impact of the Stargate project is evident in the growing number of cyclists commuting to Brussels Airport. In April, 191 candidates from 31 airport employers registered for a 3-month Bike Test. Since the beginning of 2024, an increasing number of bikers have used the cycle roads, with over 38,000 cyclists on the F3 cycle road, of which +23,000 are heading towards the airport terminal, and +16,000 are traveling to Brussels Airport Cargo.

In conclusion, thanks to Stargate, many Brussels airport employees have discovered the numerous advantages of biking to work, such as avoiding traffic jam stress, being environmentally sustainable, releasing endorphins, and enjoying a relaxed arrival home regardless of a busy workday.
