Enhancing Airside Navigation and Safety at Budapest Airport
03.06.2025
As part of Stargate, Sopra Steria is launching a new activity within WP3 at Budapest Airport. This initiative involves the development and provision of an application solution designed to achieve two key objectives:
- Precise Route Planning for Service Vehicles: The application will offer accurate route-planning capabilities for everyday vehicle drivers operating on the airport’s extensive service roads. It will dynamically account for temporary road closures or restrictions, functioning like an “airport-specific Waze” system.
- Enhanced Situational Awareness on Aircraft Movement Areas: For vehicle drivers operating on aircraft movement areas, the solution will significantly improve situational awareness. It will display their exact location in relation to runway and taxiway intersections, and crucially, will also show the real-time movement of aircraft.

Given that the airport spans over 1,500 hectares and houses more than 200 buildings, Budapest Airport aims to provide its employees and guests with a private navigation application for internal and inter-building transport and route planning.
The airport’s complex road network, comprising service roads (accessible to cars) and restricted taxiways/runways (primarily for aircraft and a limited number of authorised vehicles), presents considerable navigation challenges. This application is poised to play a vital role in enhancing car traffic safety, effectively managing the numerous restrictions and regulations inherent in airport traffic, and providing crucial warnings to drivers. It is anticipated that the application will serve between 500 and 1,000 users.
The official launch is expected later this year.
