Inspiring Greener Journeys to and from Brussels Airport

01.02.2025

Within the Stargate programme, Brussels Airport is taking a step to inspire passengers and employees alike to embrace greener modes of transport, through a dedicated journey planner, developed with Sopra Steria.

This journey planner is truly multimodal, meaning it seamlessly combines various transport modes—including public transport, cycling, car-sharing, or park-and-ride (P+R) options. There’s no need to decide upfront how you’ll travel; the tool does the work for you, presenting a range of possibilities tailored to your needs.

You can test it here.

Prioritising Sustainability

What sets this tool apart is its commitment to sustainability. By default, journey options are ranked by “saved CO2 emissions,” highlighting the greenest choices. However, users can also sort results by time or price, ensuring flexibility and convenience.

The tool’s smart algorithm takes into account whether you’re a passenger or not. For instance, if you’re travelling with luggage, it won’t suggest a bike as a viable option. This thoughtful customisation ensures that the recommendations are both practical and user-friendly.

What’s Next?

The journey planner is just the beginning. Future updates will include “call to action” buttons, allowing users to book tickets directly through the platform. Additionally, the team plans to integrate more mobility suppliers, such as intercity buses, car-sharing services, and taxis. For airport employees, mixed journeys incorporating cycling are also in development, further expanding the tool’s versatility.
