Shared bikes at Brussels Airport: a green last-mile solution

The shared bikes next to the service points

As of 1 July, Brussels Airport and Provincie Vlaams Brabant have officially launched a shared bicycle initiative, offering a zero-emission last-mile mobility solution to the 30,000 employees working across the airport site.

By promoting a modal shift away from car use toward soft mobility, this initiative directly contributes to Brussels Airport’s broader sustainability ambitions and aligns with the goals of the Stargate programme.

A local partner with proven experience

To realise this initiative, Brussels Airport and the province launched a tender and chose to partner with Blue Mobility, an external provider with proven expertise in shared bike systems and “Back to many” models. Their well-established network across Flanders, including nearby locations, ensures strong local integration and user recognition. Operational support, including battery swaps, redistribution, and maintenance, is handled by a local partner, enabling fast response times.

Fast, flexible and available 24/7

A total of 48 Blue-bike bicycles—22 of which are electric —have been distributed across five strategically located bike stations. These stations connect key zones across the airport site, from the terminal to the cargo area. Unlike shuttle buses, the shared bikes are available 24/7, giving users maximum flexibility and autonomy throughout the day.

Using the bikes is easy and intuitive: employees simply unlock and return them via the Blue-bike mobile app. Rides must start and end at one of the stations, following a “Back to Many” model. While the service is paid, companies within the Brussels Airport community can request vouchers to support their employees’ access to the bikes.

Minimal infrastructure, maximum impact

The shared bike network was implemented with minimal impact on existing infrastructure. Temporary pop-up stands and existing facilities were used wherever possible, with only two additional bike racks installed to complete the setup.

The set-up will remain in place for one year and will be evaluated based on usage to determine whether it will become a permanent part of the airport’s mobility infrastructure.
