SAF Purchase & Delivery Pilot

02.10.2025

In the context of Stargate, Brussels Airport, To70, and UHasselt worked toward the development of a SAF Pilot.

This initiative aims to set a critical precedent by establishing an airport-led model for the group purchase and delivery of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). This  approach will create a standardised, replicable blueprint that can be adopted by Stargate fellow airports in Athens, Toulouse, and Budapest. Crucially, this effort simultaneously focuses on building deep, practical expertise among all Stargate stakeholders through hands-on experience in the complex processes of SAF procurement, supply chain management, and certification. By undertaking these steps, the Stargate consortium will lead by example, demonstrating a viable and effective strategy for the entire aviation industry to significantly reduce challenging Scope 3 flight emissions using SAF.

How does it work?

The Stargate pilot project successfully procured a volume of blended SAF precisely equivalent to the emissions generated by Stargate partners flying to the Toulouse General Assembly. This action is projected to mitigate approximately 10 tons of CO2. After calculating the precise emissions, the consortium worked with partner airlines and their fuel suppliers to source the necessary SAF. Once supplied to the airport, the final step was ensuring the SAF’s emissions credits could be properly claimed and distributed among all Stargate partners.

This initiative follows other actions taken by the Stargate consortium, with a prolific team focusing on Sustainable Aviation Fuel, consisting of

  • Our lighthouse airport Brussels Airport serves as a testbed for SAF blending, promotional campaigns and the use of the electric fuel dispenser truck.
  • Our partner Quatra collects and recycles Used Cooking Oil, a key feedstock for SAF. Discover their unique expertise in the video below!
  • Community partner Skytanking focuses on the design and development of the SAF blending installation and a custom-made electric fuel dispenser truck.
  • The University of Hasselt is responsible for the development of a SAF blending business model.
  • Consultancy agency To70 takes the lead in the creation of initiatives to stimulate the use of SAF.
  • Our fellow airports Athens, Toulouse and Budapest is implementing at least one of the SAF actions listed in the Stargate action plan.
